In the 2000s, street-style amekaji began to gain popularity. A special issue of Takarajima magazine featued Shibuya casual fashion as one of the subculture trends of 1987. Shibukaji was modeled after the American fashion worn by street gangs in Shibuya during the 1980s and 1990s. It spread nationwide and was renamed amekaji retrospectively. Currently, shibukaji tends to refer to a rough syle rather than a traditional style. The term basically refers to the latest casual style imported from America.
